Safety data sheets for hazardous chemicals: a practical site guide

A safety data sheet (SDS) gives workers and emergency responders critical information about a hazardous chemical. Before the product reaches the work area, the SDS should be checked against the label and used to plan handling, storage, exposure controls, first aid, spill response and disposal.

For builders, subcontractors and tradies, the key point is simple: the SDS describes the chemical, while your site documents and controls explain how it will be used safely for the actual job.

Information current: 5 August 2026. Local requirements vary, so check current material from the WHS or OHS regulator where the work is performed. The national Model Code is useful general orientation, but it is not automatically applicable law in every state or territory.

Main hazardous chemical risks on site

Construction chemicals include fuels, paints, solvents, adhesives, sealants, cleaning agents, concrete treatments, resins, compressed gases and waterproofing products.

Depending on the product and task, workers may face:

  • inhalation of vapours, fumes, gases, mists or dust
  • burns, poisoning, skin absorption or serious eye damage
  • sensitisation or longer-term health effects
  • fire, explosion or dangerous reactions
  • oxygen displacement in enclosed areas
  • environmental harm from spills or incorrect disposal.

Risk can increase when chemicals are sprayed, heated, mixed, decanted or used in poorly ventilated areas. Conditions such as static discharge, incompatible materials, ignition sources and hot work also need attention.

What should be sorted before work starts

Confirm every chemical product intended for the job and obtain its current SDS from the manufacturer, importer or supplier. Check that the product identifier on the SDS exactly matches the container label.

An Australian SDS should be written in English and identify its preparation or review date. It should also provide Australian manufacturer or importer details and an Australian emergency contact number.

Use the SDS to confirm:

  • the product’s classification, hazards and exposure routes
  • intended uses and any stated restrictions
  • safe handling, transport and storage conditions
  • incompatible substances and conditions to avoid
  • required ventilation or engineering controls
  • suitable protective clothing, gloves, eye protection and respiratory protection
  • first aid, firefighting and spill-response measures
  • disposal requirements.

Manufacturers and importers prepare SDSs for hazardous chemicals before first supply to a workplace. They must review an SDS at least every five years and amend it when necessary to keep the information correct and current. A business that packages or relabels a hazardous chemical using its own product name may be treated as a manufacturer, so this should be checked before changing product information or issuing a replacement SDS.

What good controls and documents usually cover

A compliant SDS follows a standard 16-section structure. The sections progress from identification and hazard information through first aid, firefighting, spills, handling, exposure controls, physical properties, reactivity, health effects, disposal, transport and regulatory information.

The SDS should then inform site-specific arrangements such as:

  • the hazardous chemical register and SDS collection
  • chemical risk assessments or task procedures
  • storage and segregation plans
  • spill and emergency response arrangements
  • induction, toolbox talk and training records
  • inspection, exposure monitoring or health monitoring records where relevant
  • permits and coordination arrangements for interacting trades.

Good controls address how the product will actually be opened, mixed, applied, cleaned up and discarded. Engineering measures may include local exhaust ventilation, enclosed systems, spray booths or mechanical handling that reduces contact. PPE should be selected for the product, exposure and task, then fitted, maintained and used correctly.

Keep SDSs readily accessible to the people who may need them. Workers should know where to find the current version and understand the sections relevant to their work and emergency actions.

When a SWMS or another site document may apply

A SWMS may be needed when chemical use forms part of high risk construction work under the requirements applying to the site. Examples can include work in a confined space, demolition, structural alteration or work near specified services.

Where a SWMS applies, it should connect the high-risk activity and chemical hazards with the actual work steps, controls, responsibilities and review arrangements. For other tasks, a chemical risk assessment, safe work procedure, permit, ventilation plan or emergency plan may be the more appropriate site-specific document.

Practical warning signs

Pause the task and clarify the controls when:

  • the SDS is missing, unreadable, outdated or for another product
  • a container is unlabelled or its contents are uncertain
  • the stated use differs from how the product will be used
  • workers have not been briefed on exposure or emergency measures
  • ventilation, spill equipment, first aid or specified PPE is unavailable
  • incompatible products are stored or mixed together
  • workers report irritation, dizziness, breathing difficulty or other symptoms
  • a formulation, process or work area has changed without review.
