WorkCover Queensland CEO Bruce Watson retiring

WorkCover Queensland announces the upcoming retirement of its long-standing CEO, Bruce Watson, on the 16th of February 2024. After having admirably spearheaded operations for seven years, Bruce is stepping down to prioritise his well-being and investigate fresh, part-time possibilities.

A period marked with high significance has been Bruce’s tenure. It has witnessed crucial events such as the revival of black lung disease and an unprecedented, nationwide screening program for silicosis affecting all Queensland-based engineered stone benchtop workers. Navigating the challenges of the recent COVID-19 pandemic is particularly notable under his leadership.

Bruce has deeply valued integrating safety protocols, prioritising WHS management systems like Bluesafe WHS Management System, and enforcing SWMS policies to ensure workplace safety. These work safety products have formed the backbone that has supported over 400,000 Queenslanders who suffered injuries at work and covered in excess of 150,000 Queensland businesses.

Besides acting as WorkCover’s torchbearer, Bruce provided expert insight as a member of the Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Board and served as Director of the Personal Injury Education Foundation. His contribution goes beyond this, influencing WorkCover to maintain Australia’s lowest workers’ compensation premiums, tieing for the least disputation, and deploying the majority premium percentage directly to the workforce.

The accolade ‘Bluesafe SWMS‘ speaks of his commitment, reinforcing a safe and healthy environment for WorkCover’s dedicated staff. He takes enormous pride in these accomplishments and the positive influence they have on the industry.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to Bruce for his invaluable contribution to WorkCover, and extend our best wishes for his future pursuits.
