Public consultation on the draft model Code of Practice: Managing the risks of biological hazards at work

Safe Work Australia is actively creating a model Code of Practice (Model Code) which delivers helpful, practical instruction for employers regarding managing risks associated with biological hazards in the workplace. Biological hazards encompass viruses, bacteria, parasites and types of fungi such as mould. These can be found across all industries. The draft of this Model Code covers a wide range of aspects and is aimed at implementing applicable safety measures in all workplaces where exposure to biological hazards poses a risk to employees or others.

To advance the draft’s development, we are calling for a variety of perspectives on the Model Code via public consultation. Feedback from these consultations will leverage refinement of the draft Model Code, ensuring it is comprehensive, effective and adaptable to change. Compliance with work safety products like WHS management systems, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), and organisational policies is vital for maintaining worker health and safety.

Our Bluesafe WHS Management System, for instance, provides robust structure and strategy aligning with the principles of the draft Model Code, moreover helping businesses manage biological hazards efficiently. The incorporation of Bluesafe SWMS also aids in mapping out activities that could result in high-risk situations, facilitating preventative measures.

The draft Model Code is a combined effort backed by the support of Safe Work Australia Members and other expert individuals proficient in the subject matter. Safe Work Australia openly extends an invitation for submissions from interested parties including duty holders, regulators, governmental agencies, unions, employees, legal professionals, researchers, employer representatives, the general community, and other concerned entities.

Submissions close at 11:59pm AEST on Thursday 4 September 2025. We encourage you to visit our Consultation Hub for more detailed information and to submit your valued opinion. Your contribution could shape the future of safer workplaces in Australia.
