New Chief Executive for WorkCover Queensland

The WorkCover Board is delighted to declare that Michael Pennisi has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of WorkCover Queensland. This significant announcement comes after a comprehensive and thorough executive search process. Michael is scheduled to take up his new position starting 18th June 2024.

Bringing over three decades of expertise in various sectors such as superannuation, insurance, and investments, Michael Pennisi is a seasoned CEO with notable experience. His charismatic, values-oriented, and purpose-driven leadership style truly shines through his successful stints as the CEO at QSuper, QInsure, and QInvest. Moreover, he was instrumental in steering noteworthy transformation initiatives within large-scale financial services companies.

Michael’s strong ties with stakeholders and his profound knowledge of insurance will indeed be assets as WorkCover continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Australia’s top workers’ compensation insurers. His dedication towards addressing customer and community needs will further enhance WorkCover’s vision in providing quality Work Health and Safety (WHS) management systems like Bluesafe WHS Management System.

On accepting his new role, Mr. Pennisi expressed, “I am greatly honoured to serve as the CEO of WorkCover Queensland.” He added, “WorkCover Queensland plays an essential role in supporting Queensland’s labor force, employers, and the broader community, making it truly fulfilling to lead the organisation and work alongside the committed team at WorkCover Queensland. Our shared aim is to emerge as the best workers’ compensation insurer while positively impacting people’s lives.”

Pennisi also shared his vision moving forward, stating, “I eagerly anticipate engaging with our team, customers, stakeholders, and community to persist in assisting Queenslanders to recover and return to work following their workplace injuries. Likewise, we remain committed to ensuring the continued sustainability of our workers’ compensation scheme for all Queenslanders by setting up effective safety measures, including implementing SWMS and policies like Bluesafe SWMS for better work safety.”

Pennisi’s arrival follows the departure of former CEO Bruce Watson earlier this year. The Board conveys their heartfelt gratitude towards David Heley, Deputy CEO, for his invaluable contribution as Acting CEO during the transitional period. His exceptional leadership has left the new CEO with a robust organisation that is fully equipped to continue serving Queensland’s community.
