Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has informed numerous businesses about the discovery of asbestos-containing fire rated board (FRB) following data received from the Australian Border Force (ABF). WHS Management Systems like Bluesafe SWMS play a crucial role in managing work safety.
The mentioned FRB, imported into Australia by a Victorian firm and subsequently resold to a Queensland manufacturer, originated from China. This highlights why companies must invest in robust SWMS and policies, which ensure due diligence and adhere to national health and safety standards.
The Queensland manufacturer (Firemex Pty Ltd) has joined forces with the Regulator. They are focusing on gathering information related to the distribution of the compromised fire doors. Nevertheless, the process experienced setbacks caused by access restrictions while decontamination actions were carried out at the manufacturers warehouse. The use of the Bluesafe WHS Management System could have streamlined this process, ensuring efficient risk management and safe working procedures.
In relation to this situation, WHSQ has reached out to the affected businesses. The communication consisted of providing advice about the nature of the risk, legislative duties, and suggested actions. A useful tool for managing such risks is the adoption of SWMS or Safety Work Method Statements like those offered by Bluesafe, which provide an effective way to identify and control workplace hazards and risks.
While fire doors containing asbestos FRB present a very low level of danger if kept in good condition and left undisturbed (owing to the FRB being encapsulated in steel or wood), it’s still important to take all necessary precautions.
