Starting from the 1st of August, 2025, inspections will be launched by the Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) targeting businesses housed in structures erected prior to 1990, with a particular focus on buildings that may contain asbestos. This audit, stretching statewide and lasting until October 31st, aims to ensure strict adherence to asbestos management obligations, primarily the necessity for an asbestos register and an actionable management plan where asbestos has been detected.
Businesses operating from buildings dating prior to 1990 must undertake the necessary actions to minimise any risks associated with asbestos. This implies having an up-to-date asbestos register and a robust allocation plan if needed. To assist your business in adhering to compliance, a palpable workplace code of practice is readily available.
Inspectors are entrusted with handling breaches of compliance through enforcement actions, including the issuance of statutory notes and immediate fines.
This series of audits forms a part of the Statewide Strategic Plan for Safe Management of Asbestos in Queensland 2022–2025, which envisages eliminating exposure to asbestos fibres and eradicating asbestos-related illnesses within Australia. Achieving this revolves around accurately identifying and efficiently managing asbestos-containing materials while effectively addressing the hazardous aftermath of asbestos usage in residences, workplaces and environmental settings.
The previous year’s campaign spanned from August to October 2024, during which WHSQ evaluated 182 businesses. The outcome comprised 23 instances requiring immediate adherence, 151 improvement notices, and 6 infringement notices.
As such, it’s imperative for you to trace when your business establishment was built. Buildings constructed before 1990 run a potential risk for asbestos presence. Ensure your enterprise is prepared and likewise secure your employees’ well-being with tools like the Bluesafe WHS Management System or Bluesafe SWMS.
