A new 2025 comparative report has been released, outlining how workers’ compensation schemes operate across Australia and New Zealand, with key insights for employers strengthening WHS management systems and policies.
The 2025 edition of the Comparison of Workers’ Compensation Arrangements in Australia and New Zealand has now been published, providing an updated benchmark for understanding how workers’ compensation schemes differ across jurisdictions.
This biennial report delivers a detailed analysis of workers’ compensation frameworks in each Australian state and territory, as well as New Zealand. It explores variations in core elements such as scheme coverage, entitlement to benefits, return to work obligations, dispute resolution processes and cross-border arrangements for mobile workforces.
For employers and PCBUs, the findings offer valuable context for reviewing work health and safety (WHS) management systems, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) and organisational policies to ensure they align with contemporary legislative and compensation expectations. Robust internal procedures, supported by clearly documented policies and procedures, can help reduce injury risk and support effective rehabilitation and return to work outcomes. Resources to assist with this are available through specialist WHS documentation providers such as WHS management systems and SWMS templates.
The full 2025 report, including jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction comparisons and detailed data tables, can be accessed via the Safe Work Australia website.
