Consultation opens on national asbestos framework review

Safe Work Australia is seeking feedback on ways to strengthen the model WHS framework to better control asbestos risks and support the prioritised removal of asbestos-containing materials.
The Asbestos Framework Review will examine model WHS laws, regulations, codes of practice and guidance. It directly supports Safe Work Australia’s responsibilities under the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency’s Asbestos National Strategic Plan.
Stronger national asbestos controls are a key priority of the plan, with the aim of reducing exposure and preventing future asbestos-related disease.
Safe Work Australia is inviting submissions from anyone interested in asbestos management. The feedback will help identify gaps in the framework, strengthen protections and guide practical regulatory reforms.
The consultation is intended to support future changes to laws, codes and guidance that are evidence-based, nationally consistent and focused on reducing asbestos risks. Submissions will inform recommendations for Safe Work Australia Members to consider in late 2026.
Consultation closes at 11:59 pm AEST on Sunday 26 April 2026. The discussion paper and online submission form are available through Safe Work Australia’s Consultation Hub.
