Significant Reduction in Aluminium Welding Fumes Exposure Standard
17 Nov 2025•Source: Safe Work Australia
New regulations aim to enhance worker safety in welding industries.
The workplace exposure standard (WES) for aluminium welding fumes has been significantly lowered from 5 mg/m³ to 1 mg/m³, measured over an 8-hour time-weighted average. This update follows an agreement among WHS ministers and has been officially released by Safe Work Australia as part of an updated WES list.
Aluminium welding, prevalent in industries such as boat building and repair, emits hazardous fumes that pose serious health risks to workers. The new standard aligns the WES for aluminium welding fumes with the existing standards for welding fumes (not otherwise classified), providing enhanced protection for workers against the adverse effects of welding fumes.
Employers are urged to take immediate action to comply with these updated standards. Implementing robust WHS management systems and reviewing Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) are critical steps in ensuring workplace safety.
