Safe Work Australia has updated its rooftop solar installation guide to include practical guidance for employers and other duty holders on managing battery installation risks.
The changes to the Guide to managing the risks of rooftop solar installation work reflect the growing popularity of battery energy storage systems used to support rooftop solar. The updated guidance covers the work health and safety risks associated with installing these batteries.
Installing rooftop solar systems and batteries can involve serious risks, including those associated with work at heights and electricity. These hazards need to be identified and controlled.
Battery installation must be undertaken by qualified electricians in accordance with local regulations and the manufacturer’s instructions, whether the batteries are part of a new solar system or added to an existing one. Batteries should meet Australian standards and be compatible with the rooftop solar system they support.
The guide is intended for people involved across the lifecycle of rooftop solar systems on residential and commercial structures. It covers retailing, surveying, designing, installing, testing, commissioning, retrofitting, repairing, maintaining, decommissioning and removing systems, including new or retrofitted panels, inverters, batteries and associated equipment.
