SafeWork NSW has issued 23 notices addressing safety risks at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where more than 800,000 visitors are expected. Inspectors and engineers are working with event organisers to check safety compliance.

SafeWork NSW has been at the show since 24 March, offering expert advice and carrying out compliance checks to help protect workers and attendees. Its focus includes amusement rides, forklift safety, traffic management, fall prevention, fireworks displays and the storage of fireworks and gas used at food and beverage stalls.

The event’s bump-in and bump-out periods carry heightened risks as workers assemble and dismantle structures, move through busy walkways and use heavy machinery in areas with high traffic.

During these phases, inspectors are checking that workers use personal protective equipment correctly and that licensed professionals carry out high-risk tasks.

Engineers have audited selected high-risk amusement rides using the National Audit Tool to assist with checking compliance with the Work Health and Safety Regulations. Operators must undertake thorough inspections, maintenance and safety checks before rides can operate.

The 23 notices issued this Easter address risks across the show’s rides, stalls and activities. SafeWork NSW will remain on site throughout the event to respond to incidents and concerns about non-compliance.

Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin said: "Safety at the Sydney Royal Easter Show is non-negotiable, all workers and operators must follow strict safety standards to protect themselves and the public."

Curtin also said: "We have had a strong presence since 24 March, working to ensure operators understand their safety responsibilities and have the right processes in place to protect workers and visitors throughout the event."
