SafeWork NSW checks safety at all NSW snow resorts

SafeWork NSW is inspecting all NSW snow resorts this week, checking operations and safety standards to help protect workers and visitors during the snow season.

The inspections follow an earlier visit this year. Inspectors are checking whether safety standards are being maintained and assessing the safety implications of snowfall as the season continues.

The 2025 alpine ski area safety compliance program began in May with an annual industry roundtable. All snowfield operators, WorkSafe Victoria and a chairlift manufacturer took part.

Discussions covered measures to manage the effects of sudden strong winds on chairlifts and gondolas, as well as the safe operation of passenger ropeways.

SafeWork NSW Commissioner Janet Schorer said: “NSW ski resorts offer a unique, ever-changing and often hazardous environment and are visited by over a million people each season.”

“Those heading to Perisher, Thredbo, Selwyn or Charlotte Pass resorts can rest assured that SafeWork NSW continues to monitor and interact with all ski resort operators to ensure workers are properly trained and that safety standards are being met,” Commissioner Schorer said.

SafeWork NSW carries out activities throughout the season to protect workers and check compliance with work health and safety laws. Commissioner Schorer said: “Improving work health and safety compliance is a SafeWork NSW priority, with collaboration between the government, operators, their workers and the public key to realising this goal.”
