SafeWork NSW inspectors are returning to four snowfields this week for proactive mid-season safety checks focused on protecting workers and visitors.
Construction, engineering and work health and safety inspectors will revisit Thredbo Kosciuszko, Perisher Blue, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn snowfields, following inspections earlier in the year.
The alpine ski area safety compliance program began in May with a roundtable attended by all snowfield operators. Discussion covered the safe operation of passenger ropeways, including how sudden strong winds affect chairlifts and gondolas.
After the roundtable, SafeWork NSW engineers inspected the snowfields, checking protections around moving plant and the induction and safety systems provided for itinerant workers in seasonal workplaces.
Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin said inspectors would meet operators to inspect chairlifts and gondolas and check that workers were appropriately trained.
“Protecting seasonal workers and improving WHS compliance is a SafeWork priority, with collaboration between the government, operators, their workers and the public key to realising this goal.”
