New model code targets workplace silica dust risks

04 Oct 2025•BlueSafe Team•Source: Safe Work Australia

Safe Work Australia has published a new model Code of Practice to help employers manage respirable crystalline silica risks and protect workers.

The model Code of Practice, Managing risks of respirable crystalline silica in the workplace, provides practical information for employers on complying with the WHS Regulations to protect workers and others from silica dust.

Respirable crystalline silica can be released when silica-containing materials are processed, including through cutting, sanding or polishing. Inhaling this dust can cause serious conditions, including silicosis and lung cancer.

Eliminating or minimising exposure to silica dust can prevent all silica-related diseases.

Publication of the model code does not give it legal effect in every jurisdiction. It must first be approved as a code of practice within the relevant jurisdiction. Businesses can contact their WHS regulator for details of local requirements.

The model code and further silica information are available from Safe Work Australia. Readers can also subscribe to its mailing list and select the occupational lung diseases option for future silica updates.
