New interactive guide tackles SWMS myths in construction

Safe Work Australia has developed an interactive guide to help construction businesses understand when a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required and how to use one.

A review of SWMS effectiveness found they were often not being used as intended. Many people viewed them as unnecessary paperwork instead of an important part of managing hazardous work risks.

Construction activities classified as high risk have the potential to cause serious injury or death. A workplace must prepare a SWMS before starting work involving these activities.

The new guide explains the purpose of a SWMS and takes users through how to complete one, while highlighting the requirements. It aims to shift attitudes so PCBUs genuinely consider hazards and risks and use the best possible controls to protect workers.

Across three modules, the guide combines plain-English information, videos and interactive content. These materials can support toolbox talks or be used as learning activities.

The tool also contains case studies, straightforward examples of control measures for different high risk construction activities, and a toolkit of jurisdictional resources. It is designed to be useful for small businesses preparing their own SWMS and people entering the construction industry.

The guide covers requirements under the model WHS laws. Safe Work Australia advises users to check with their local regulator about whether those requirements apply in their state or territory. The tool is available on Safe Work Australia's website.
