The NSW Government has paid tribute to people who have died from work-related incidents or illness on the International Day of Mourning. In 2024, 52 people died in work-related incidents across NSW.

The annual commemoration recognises workers who have lost their lives and the lasting impact of workplace incidents, injuries and illness on their families. The NSW Government expressed its support for those grieving a loved one and renewed its commitment to reducing workplace incidents and deaths.

The 52 deaths recorded in NSW from work-related incidents in 2024 were fewer than in the previous year. The Government described the toll as a devastating reminder of the importance of workplace safety, stating that every worker deserves a safe workplace and every workplace death is a tragedy.

The Government thanked workers, unions, employers, industry groups, SafeWork NSW and other stakeholders for their contribution to safer workplaces. It said creating a safer future for others was the best tribute it could offer those who had died.

The Minns Labor Government pointed to its industrial manslaughter laws as a measure to strengthen employer accountability. The laws place responsibility for criminally unsafe workplaces on employers and hold those responsible to account.

The Government also highlighted steps taken to address silicosis, a deadly disease caused by exposure to silica dust, and its continuing efforts to find ways to better protect workers. Transport gig workers now have protection under the state's industrial regime.

SafeWork NSW will become a standalone agency from 1 July. The Government said the change would sharpen the regulator's focus on making workplaces safer for everyone in NSW.

A commemorative service is being held today for families, workers, unions and community members to pay tribute. The Government pledged to continue working towards safer workplaces so people can return home safely to their loved ones.
