Feedback sought on six crane licensing proposals

07 June 2024•BlueSafe Team•Source: Safe Work Australia

Safe Work Australia has opened consultation on six proposals to improve crane high-risk work licensing under the model WHS laws. Submissions close at 11:59 pm (AEST) on Wednesday 31 July 2024.

The proposals cover new licences, additional experience requirements for crane operators, refinements to current licences and changes to the overall crane licensing structure.

Evidence and feedback from the consultation will inform improvements to the framework. Some proposals may require further analysis, including consideration of their potential costs and benefits.

The proposals in the discussion paper and Consultation Hub are for consultation only, rather than settled changes. They may be revised following further evidence, policy analysis and stakeholder feedback.

Any regulatory changes would require agreement from Safe Work Australia Members and, for significant changes, WHS ministers.

Safe Work Australia is inviting responses from anyone with an interest in crane high-risk work licensing. This includes businesses that operate, supply or manufacture cranes, as well as unions, workers, regulators, industry bodies, government departments, training providers and the public.

The agency is also encouraging submissions from people involved in other high-risk work connected with crane operations, particularly dogging and rigging.

Feedback can be lodged through Safe Work Australia’s online Consultation Hub or by email, with the consultation open until the July deadline.
