SafeWork NSW is hosting a free art and networking event in Goulburn for women in agriculture, bringing farm safety and mental health into the conversation. ‘Chat and Create’ will run on Thursday 22 August 2024, from 10.30am to 2pm.
The event will give women working in agriculture an opportunity to meet other workers and businesses, exchange experiences and discuss safety on farms. Participants will create art while SafeWork representatives discuss safety issues affecting agricultural workplaces.
Farming accounts for one in five worker deaths in NSW. Farmers and agricultural workers also continue to suffer serious injuries and deaths at higher rates than workers in other industry sectors.
Mental health will also feature in the discussions. Farmers experience suicide and depression more commonly than the general population, with financial strain and isolation among the distinctive pressures they face.
Representatives from the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) will provide mental health education and connect attendees with services where needed. The NSW Rural Women's Network will also share resources, initiatives and service connections.
The NSW Government’s Rural Women’s Resource hub offers support across cost-of-living concerns, employment, training and careers, health and wellbeing, and recreational and social connections.
Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin said the event aimed to empower agricultural managers and workers to lead efforts to create safe workplaces. He described it as an opportunity for women in the Goulburn area to exchange ideas, connect and strengthen their work health and safety knowledge in a relaxed setting.
Women interested in attending can register through SafeWork NSW.
