Safe Work Australia is preparing for National Safe Work Month in October with the theme safety: every job, every day. The campaign follows data showing 200 workers died from work-related injuries in Australia in 2023.

Safe Work Australia’s latest data records 200 worker fatalities in 2023, alongside 139,000 workers’ compensation claims for serious injuries and illnesses.

Although injury and fatality rates have declined significantly over the past decade, the agency warned against complacency. It highlighted the people behind the figures and stated that workplace deaths and injuries are unacceptable.

Held each October, National Safe Work Month raises awareness of work health and safety and promotes action towards safe and healthy work for everyone. Safe Work Australia described a safe and healthy workplace as a fundamental right.

This year’s theme calls on workplaces of every occupation, industry, location and size to make safety a daily priority. The campaign links that focus with reducing workplace fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses.

During October, Safe Work Australia will work through the four stages of risk management: identifying hazards, assessing risks, controlling risks and reviewing controls. Practical resources and activities will support the campaign during the month and beyond.

The agency will publish more information and resources on its website as October approaches. It also invited people to subscribe to its emails and follow its social media channels for updates.
