Australia has become one of the first countries to ratify all 10 International Labour Organization (ILO) Fundamental Conventions, following its ratification of Convention 187 on 29 October.
The Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention 187 was ratified at a ceremony bringing together unions, employers and governments in Geneva, Switzerland.
Representatives from Safe Work Australia Members, the Australian Council of Trade Unions and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry attended the ceremony.
Safe Work Australia described the ratification as affirming Australia’s position as a world leader in work health and safety. The 10 Fundamental Conventions collectively recognise workplace health and safety as a fundamental principle and right.
The conventions and Australia’s ratification align with recent efforts to protect workers’ health and safety. These include initiatives under the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023–2033, new guidance and regulations addressing psychosocial hazards, including sexual and gender-based harassment, and the ban on engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs.
