Risk assessment in focus for National Safe Work Month

13 Oct 2025•BlueSafe Team•Source: Safe Work Australia

Safe Work Australia is focusing on risk assessment in week two of National Safe Work Month, building on the hazards identified during the first week.

The October campaign is working through the risk management process under the theme of practising safety on every job, every day. Assessing risks is the next step before the focus moves to controlling risks in week three.

A risk assessment considers the potential consequences of exposure to a hazard and how likely those consequences are. It helps determine the severity of the risk, whether current controls are working, what further action is needed and how urgently it should be taken.

Safe Work Australia’s activity kit provides templates for assessing the potential severity of harm from a hazard and the likelihood of that harm occurring.

The level of detail in an assessment can vary according to the hazard and the information, data and resources available. An assessment may involve a discussion with workers or use risk analysis tools and techniques designed for particular risks or recommended by safety professionals.

Expert or specialist advice may be useful when assessing risks in complex situations. Safe Work Australia is also sharing further campaign ideas, activities and resources through its website and social media.
