Safe Work Australia has updated the List of Deemed Diseases in Australia to add malignant mesothelioma and bladder cancer related to firefighting and remove COVID-19.

The changes follow the 2023 Interim Review of the List of Deemed Disease in Australia. Safe Work Australia has released the review report alongside a revised list and supporting guidance material.

The review’s scope was limited to the latest scientific evidence on COVID-19, cancers associated with firefighter work, Japanese encephalitis and other veterinarian diseases.

The review findings informed the addition of the two firefighting-related cancers and the removal of COVID-19. Further information is available through Safe Work Australia’s workers’ compensation information.
