Greg, a respected agribusiness owner operating a cattle, sheep and cropping farm in Brimin, has been awarded $10,000 to implement safety advancements adjusted for his enterprise, along with an additional $10,000 to enhance work safety at the Rutherglen Football Netball Club (RFNC), where he holds the position of President.
In alliance with AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria, this yearly contest acknowledges the hardwork of those behind-the-scenes heroes and the unique spot that sport holds within rural communities. As an industry leader running products like Bluesafe WHS Management System or SWMS on-site, Greg’s approach to worker safety on and off the field is remarkable.
Since his teenage years, Greg’s commitment to farming has only deepened. Not only is he an exceptional leader but also a passionate volunteer and generous supporter of his local community. His generosity was once again evident in 2021 when he and his wife Kaylene bought land adjacent to their club and donated more than 4,000 square meters to aid in the construction of an additional netball court and carpark – a legacy that will benefit both the club and its members for many generations.
Belonging to a community that values mutual support and safety, be it at the RFNC or in the workplace, Greg has devoted countless hours serving this cause. He emphasises the importance of Bluesafe WHS Management System and firmly believes that it’s vital to promote work safety not just to the workers, but to their families as well, so they’re aware of potential hazards.
WorkSafe CEO, Joe Calafiore, acknowledged the virtues of volunteers like Greg, remarking that people like him exemplify why it’s crucial to maintain safety at work–because getting back safely allows people to contribute to building stronger communities.
“It’s easy to see why Greg Lumby is so esteemed at Rutherglen Football Netball Club and in his local community”, Mr Calafiore said. Greg was named WorkSafe’s Footy’s Favourite Farmer for 2024, an accolade that reinforces the significance of work safety, as we all share a common responsibility to ensure it extends beyond our workplaces into our communal lives.
Greg viewed this award not just as an honour, but as an excellent opportunity to invest in creating a safer workplace and football club environment. With products like Bluesafe SWMS, identifying hazards and controlling access can become more efficient, thus making areas like farms safer.
The $10,000 prize money from WorkSafe presents Greg with a fantastic opportunity to review his business operations and implement crucial safety measures on his property. Emerging as the victor among multiple monthly winners, Greg received a farm safety package worth almost $2,000 alongside merchandise assortments for his local club and those who nominated him.
