Calling for Expressions of Interest for the Work Health and Safety Industry Sector Standing Committees

On 15th February 2024, the assignment of chairpersons and members to six dedicated Industry Sector Standing Committees (ISSCs) was announced. With their tenure ending on 12th September 2026, these committees play a pivotal role in promoting safety at workplaces via work health and safety products such as WHS management systems, SWMS, and policies.

The ISSCs, established under Queensland’s Work Health and Safety Act 2011, unite industry networks to address industry-specific work health and safety matters. Notably, these committees are adept at leveraging the extensive utility of revolutionary workplace safety products, such as the Bluesafe WHS Management System.

Six specialised ISSCs, each catering to a unique industry sector, consists of a Chairperson and at least half a dozen other representatives.Stressing equitable representation, these representatives mirror the employer-worker dynamic within the industry, often incorporating expert members as well.

From 20th May 2024 onwards, permission was given for the creation of up to ten ISSCs via an official gazette announcement. As a result, the Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) is presently inviting nominations for filling the existing and imminent vacancies in these pivotal committees.

These nominations primarily seek individuals with practical experience and proficient handling of work health and safety management in pertinent industry sectors. By forwarding these nominations to the Minister for consideration, OIR ensures transparency throughout the selection process. The decision to appoint a candidate not only rests upon their professional aptitude but also considers gender equity and equal representation from both workers and employers.

Acknowledging its commitment towards diversity and inclusivity, the Queensland Government encourages the nomination of dedicated candidates from across Queensland who bring diverse skills and perspectives to the table. These include suitably qualified women, individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and other diverse groups.

Prospective nominees can send their applications via email at OIRBoardsandCommittees@oir.qld.gov.au by 10th October 2025. These nominations should contain pertinent personal and professional details as per the prescribed forms.
