Queensland asbestos audits to target older business premises

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors will begin asbestos compliance audits on 1 August 2024, targeting businesses in buildings constructed before 1990 and premises likely to contain asbestos.
The statewide campaign will continue until 31 October, with inspectors checking compliance with requirements for asbestos registers and management plans.
Businesses operating from premises built before 1990 are being urged to ensure both are in place. A workplace code of practice provides detailed information to help businesses meet the legal standard.
Inspectors will take enforcement action where they identify non-compliance, including statutory notices and on-the-spot fines.
The campaign follows audits conducted from September to November 2023. That campaign assessed 139 businesses and resulted in 103 improvement notices and 10 infringement notices.
The audits form part of the National Strategic Plan for Asbestos Awareness and Management 2019-2023 and the Statewide Strategic Plan for the Safe Management of Asbestos in Queensland 2022-2025.
These plans aim to eliminate asbestos-related diseases in Australia by preventing exposure to asbestos fibres. Their approach includes targeting asbestos use and disposal and addressing asbestos remaining in homes, workplaces and the environment.
