New regulation on processing crystalline silica substances in effect (1 September 2024)

In line with the nationwide consensus reached in February 2023, more stringent regulations governing the processing of crystalline silica substances (CSS) were activated on 1 September 2024. For clarity, a CSS is identified as any material that weighs-in with at least one per cent of crystalline silica.

The advent of these enhanced regulatory frameworks necessitates stricter controls for CSS processing across all industries. Businesses have a key responsibility to first evaluate whether the CSS processing involved carries a high-risk factor. In situations where potential dangers are substantial, integrating additional protocols and utilising a comprehensive risk control plan, such as Bluesafe SWMS, becomes an indispensable tool. These measures courageously mitigate the danger surrounding workers’ health and safety, and that of various individuals in their peripheral vicinity.

Furthermore, businesses must deliberate on the necessity of conducting air monitoring and/ or health assessments; this consideration falls under existing requirements stipulated by WHS Regulations. Utilising robust strategies like the Bluesafe WHS Management System can significantly benefit in adhering to these specifications, simultaneously enhancing overall work safety.

Beyond this surface-level introduction to the new regulations concerning CSS processing, further explanation and details are to follow serving reliable guidance through this complex landscape of workplace health and safety in Australian businesses.
